Captain Benns and the internet tree

Group diagram of the Internet including all the key players made with a selection of different coloured post it notes - Explanation for the idiots among you.
Sort of task you do at school in year 6, but a good starting point from developing our individual ideas. One fo the groups did a kind of rain onto tree onto earth version, but we stuck to doing as little as possible.
Kindly and nervously presented by Ollie Benns cos we all chickened it at the news of it mobile filming.
We got a bit muddled when it came to sites such as soundcloud and last fm which are music but fit under social networking as well. Think we missed off some of the browsers and add ons, pretty much anything we couldn’t comprehend. It was one of those tasks that made me feel a bit OCD. I want to be able to label everything but some stupid sites wont fit in my boxes.
Beauty of the Internet I spose.

following the crowd

"Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma, which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary."

hahahah

used to bloody love this video! it was always vh1 when i was off sick as a nipper.
cheers dp3 for reminding me off it ! and pointing out how him, talking heads n a few others were the arcade fire of the time.

insert opinions on the mystery Dan Saffer and his respected opinions here.

http://www.designinterviews.com/interviews/interaction-design-is-an-applied-art

After reading this interview about 4 and half times it started to sink in. he’s a bloke who knows what he’s on about, although doesn’t say anything groundbreaking. I’ve never heard of him before, but im quite the ignoramus so this doesn’t surprise me too much.

Is obvious im word filling ?

First question he’s gotta deal with is about self teaching vs. design education, there’s benefits to both, as he points out. Sitting at your computer digging through the intenet, playing on tutorials and learning how to do stuff is a great way to start learning stuff. Its always gonna be a huge help if you know more than nothing, and it’s a great way to find useful sites that might lead on to other things, contstantly expanding and building on what you know already. Being taught by a person in the know has also got its advantages, people that have a steadfast knowledge of a specific area can offer a vast amount of insight, helpful tips and successful methods gained from their own mistakes, saving time and pushing you forward.

He carries on to say how important it is for designers to understand the properties of the media they work in, in order make the most of it and use it to all its capabilities. I hate the coding aspect of interactive, I’m from a graphic design and illustration background, always harping on about it, and I find it hard to translate the ideas that would work so well on paper to web, and do them justice. Most of the work I’ve produced relevant to this pathway is still in the mindset of a graphic designer, I think this comes from not knowing enough about the back end, how to code, and the potential of the web, I’m not familiar enough with the media I’m hoping to work with. The more lessons I force myself to attend the more ill learn about what I can do and how to go about it slowly but surely my mindset will change to a more fluid, anything is possible, javascript for life, this is how ill make this slide into that, journey planning setting. I hope.

Final point I’m gonna crack on with, he states, in his opinion, what the two typical mistakes of new designers, and they’re both ones I trip over. First one being falling in love with an idea so much so I cant see past it. I’m set on what I want to do, a novel navigation say, and although it might fit in with my theme and whatever else, it’s not functional. I’m too pigheaded or blind to see a better way to approach my problem, I never do enough variations of the design to overcome it. Even the subtlest change could have a huge impact on the usability and interactivity of my concept. Least I know so can start to overcome it. Cheers danny boy.

Second one is the lack of detail, another one Ive gotta say im guilty of, small things such as the placing of a social networking icon on every page or whatever, I don’t bother considering it, then it ruins me at the end. All great designers have got it all down to a tee, I think this is something ill pick up as times goes on and I pracice design and build more sites. Key is in the detaaaaaaaaaaails. haha.

saff-dog what a fox

Context 2: a company i wouldnt kick off about working for.

THE NEON HIVE
After ambling through the internet and countless design creative digital innovative actually quite mundane bollocks I found an agency I would actually love to work for.
Most of the places I found seemed pretty slutty when it came to work they accepted and the stuff they churned out. No matter how smooth, sleek, quirky or innovative there own site, the work was all pretty average, expected and tiresome. Wetdog Creative were one of the companies I had a nose at, they’re probably the best example.
What I liked about The Neon Hive, apart from the fact they’ve worked with Jon Burgerman, someone I’m a bit weak at the knees for, is all they’re end products and finished pieces say something not only about the clients needs, but about the designers as well. Like a perfect harmony.
It’s all quite quirky, cool and obscure. They’re into their graphic design, illustration, packaging design and typography, which no matter how much I hear is in the past, is still something I absolutely buzz for. They’re killin the website design, customised wordpress design and CMS work, so keeping relevant and current, and projecting their style over everything. They’ve got the perfect mix of physical print and interactive design.
I think aswell, I found it hard to find a company that had the same kind of interets as I did work wise, and one where I feel I could realistically fit in with my style and my personality and interests. Resn.co.nz, a creative digital partner not in the UK, is a company I will never cease to be amazed by. Thev’ve got a lot in common, although on a grander scale, with The Neon Hive. So its gonna be one of the two haha.
I feel my style of design and illustration would work within this company, probably not right now, but maybe in a coupla when I’ve developed what I’m doing and am producing more authentic, developed, steadfast work.
I’m pretty much sold for working here haha.. Just gotta convince them now.

IN OTHER NEWS
Whilst I was searching I looked on Jon Burgerman’s website and saw it had been made by James Lindeman, the programming bloke I was supposed to work with at Sport Lived, the placement I probably foolishly fucked off. So there is a bit of networking ill never know. Sent the bloke a pesky email, in an attempt. Not holding too much hope out however. Might try and wangle it in the report somewhere haha that I potentially had a great network but I chose to dick it off for lie ins and diagnosis murder. Sweeeeeeeeeeeet,

a line is a dot that went for a walk.

Suck it Sport Lived.

WHAT DOES IT DO ?
It allows you to drag different sounds and create youre own kinda song, you idiot.

WHAT I'M SAYING
According to Google the great, this site was designed to promote and represent the incredible polo, an apparently droopy eyed beat boxer, not magician as expected, from France. As with pretty much every site we’ve referred to in class its FWA approved, but astoundingly that’s not where I found the little blighter (helping hand from another). It came about from a collaboration by Alan Durand, a French bloke with a portfolio including website design, flash and animation, and some fella called Romain Delambily, although he’s impossible to track down so what input he had I dunno.
The whole things made disappointingly with flash, which as my worksheet hints at is gonna have some sort of affect on its accessibility from tablets, which are slowly but surely taking over the world. The site was made in 2009, and the original iPad released in 2010, so the html5/flash war, or accessibility from iPads wouldn’t have even been considered at this point. Another hefty head butt reminder of how fast this industry changes and evolves. It should work on all android tablets, which I'm guessing now Steve Jobs has kicked the bucket will kind of race ahead, but it’ll struggle, or not at all work on iPads since they’ve shrugged off flash in favour of html5.however a quick visit to incredibox shows promises of a version 2, perhaps they’re getting on it and preparing the concept for world of the tablet. I had a quick whizz on my phone to see how it would get along with that, android HTC and it didn’t at all. It thought about it but eventually gave up.
DESIGN WISE!
A quick initial shows the user how to operate everything without an ‘about’ section, or a lot of text, leaving a smooth simplistic design. The icons are easily interpreted making it useable to folks from pretty much any country, there’s nothing complicated at all, everything’s been made as simple and minimalist as possible so most of the users attention is focused on the music of mister Malburet, generating a hype for nothing but him. I liked him enough from his quirkily odd site to give him the old MySpace search.
I reckon, despite the outstanding simplicity of the site that users are likely to return cos of:
The amount of different combinations of sound are plentiful, the user chooses they’re own outcome, (the designers making sure every option is pretty to the ears o course.)
It sounds nice, better than some of the dog muck I've got hidden away on my iTunes,
And of course there’s the feature animations every couple of minutes.

SO..
Its great, it’s a kind of modest, understated site that keeps itself to itself, lets you know nothing but the essentials leading you towards giving the fella a little search cos you’re so intrigued and happy with what you’ve interacted with so far.
The designs pretty much flawless, in my not so humble opinion anyway, and they’re all French blokes. Can’t really go wrong.

NUMERO DUO  -  http://www.allisnotlo.st/index_en.html  -  (like the arcade fire number, but abit tackier)

EH?
Its another one of those infectious html5 Google chrome experiments, sorta like the wilderness downtown but not a jam jar as good, according to t’interweb it’s a “ participatory music video in multiple windows. Powered by HTML5. Enter a message to be danced out within the song.” – not an essay so no intention of referencing haha feck yer.
WHAT IM SAYING!
Tadaa, brought to you from OK Go, Pilobolous, a group of dancers, and o course the infamous Googul, this little number involves the playing of a video in perfect timing to Ok Go’s new track All is not lost. Ok Go are no foreigner to wildly charming videos, got feathers like Here we go again, the treadmill number, Last leaf a, a toastily cool animation and This too shall pass, the paint cannon vid-yo, in their ground breaking cap.
The site starts off by the user typing in any message they want, it chews over what you’ve opted for, and the music video begins. Its similar to the wilderness downtown, Arcade fire, in thart it fires a lot of different browser windows at you, all of which dance around your screen realigning and resizing, other than that its in its own league. The amount of bulge action is astounding, and well received by me haha, the dancing and choreography plays a huge part in the interactive video, sort of an online kaleidoscope kinda fing, in only one colour but with people through dance.
The end message can be shared or downloaded as a wall paper, it’s the only thing the user has an choice in, having said this the whole things engaging somehow. I've watched it an obscene amount, but I’m partial to a skintight leotard every now and then, might just be me. I’m confident users would return, and it not just wear off as one time novelty. It’s proven that although Ok Go’s videos don’t necessarily increase record sales they do have a huge impact on fan loyalty. Fans share re-post and re-blog the videos and interactive experiences through all kids of social networking sites, creating a huge audience and fan base for the band. Hugely beneficial outcome, as well as a shed load of fun t makes I reckon.
More music artists and bands are surfing the technology wave, artists such as Bjork with her star gazing applications, and Norah Jones 3 dreams of black interactive music video, which wouldn’t work on my computer haha.

NUMERO ER.. NUMBER 3  -  toddler lock app couresty of android  -  (not bothered what you think.its great)

WHAT IS IT?
Really? It’s a lock.. For toddlers.
MY VALUABLE THOUGHTS
Toddler lock is a free application on android, that pretty much does what it says on the tin, unlike other toddler applications tho it completely locks off the phone and operates like a screen saver; there’s no way for the child to press the wrong button and accidentally call that black sheep mother in law you’ve been avoiding cos she always sends coal instead of fivers for Christmas.
It’s by no means the best it could be, but I thought id write about it cos me, my mom and my stinky little brother love it. I reckon as some sort of side project id like to do a better version (id have a go at the design, and what can actually be done) but I still think this is a brilliant starting block.
Touch screens fascinate people of all ages, it’s just like all the sci-fi moves said it would be, small people too. The phone lets out little chiming noises every couple of seconds and every time contact is made with the screen, there’s basic shapes in fluorescent colours, and the ability to drag and draw all over. By pulling down the bar at the top the screens erased, and you can start again – the only way to exit this mode is to touch the screen corner in the correct order, something Isaac hasn’t yet figured out.

I use it all the time, and Isaacs not yet bored of it, the ultimate test, I've had it for months, and he’s pretty clever. Win for toddler lock. It’s designed for this age so I'm guessing iPads iPhones and android numbers, although why you’d shoving all this into the face of your toddler relative I've got no clue, perhaps the only flaw in the entire concept.

I’m tired so not writing anymore.

Don’t go thinking I'm a neglectful older sister haha I’m bloody well not.

back in the ng7

things to report on the social:

leeds was amazing. better than i figured it would be.

managed to finally work the nintendog 64 ive had since my birthday, so much better than i remembered. im actually fantastic. golden eye and throwing knives my speciality.

biggest and bestest acheivement, number 52 of the three thousand new years rezos i scrawled down is complete, successfully purchased a pair of quads, more t the dismay of pretty much everyone but janis, and hit the floor. haha needless t say again im fuckin excellent. we travelled to oadby via 3 scraggy worn down buses and took the place by heatwave. we tried ard, sweated what should be an illegal amount and gained muscle pain in our legs, but we went for it. roller derby was an utter success. sort of. were not going back, however we are persuing the roller skating route. since were so good. so so good.
just incase you pea brains were wondering, all the women there were exactly like juno but fitter, and friendly, and a dream. swoon.

multimedia m'orientated.

decided to dick that job off, haha, the boss had issues out but was out issued by mesen. Despite giving them my well deserved summer and pretty much 97% of my patience im officially announcing im out.
you never get the chance in reality to sack off jobs that make you feel crappy, im not hugely into being talked to like shite, or taken the piss out of, even less into moaning about it so gotta make the most of the luxury of youth.
i promise thee it wasnt a pigheaded move, i learnt baskets full, i soldiered on, did a good job, they were pelased, and despite the snottiness of th bloke twards the end like to think i was pretty sound. marks got the chance now, and i had the rest of the summer, a load of money. unforntunately no reference.
cant win em allllll

illustrations in the paper as per. sent it to some dumbwitted nostril tho so now such look for the few measles that might bother reading, you ent gonna see it. for the best. it was dog.

im going to to draw my curtains and try and make this less of an eye sore. jus saw ollie benns's's's and it looks pretty sweeeeeeet hahah
